Garden Shed Café, 7 Regent Place, Leamington Spa, CV31 1EH (01926 730776). Lunch wrap and a filter coffee £7.25. Closed Sundays.
It would seem that the Garden Shed Café is one of Leamington’s best-kept (vegan) secrets. Tucked away on Regent’s Place, this quaint, living-room-sized eatery serves a range of vegan, and often gluten-free dishes, all at student-friendly prices.
I opted for the Lunch Wrap at £4.75: homemade coriander falafel, with grilled vegetables, hummus, and fiery salsa. This was moist, flavoursome and filling, though a little messy to eat! The falafel felt quite oily, though this didn’t take away from the tremendous flavour. The wrap can even be served gluten free on request! My filter coffee, which arrived in a generous little cafetière with a sizeable jug of soymilk, was creamy and delicious.
The service was quite haphazard, with a twenty-minute wait to receive just tap water and coffee, let alone the food. Having said that, the chaotic atmosphere did, strangely enough, suit the higgledy-piggledy aesthetic of the café. Moreover, we chatted for hours and never felt pressured to leave, or indeed to order more from the menu (however tempting that may have been). Better still, we were even given a vegan chocolate mousse dessert with banana chips and coconut on the house, which was light and indulgent in equal measure.
Did it live up to expectations? Definitely. Just be sure not to order food (or anything for that matter) if you’re in a hurry.
Value for money: 9/10
Top tip: They do Deliveroo, or you can order food in advance over the telephone, and pick up at the door! Be prepared to hang around for a table on a Saturday afternoon.
